Nursing Degrees – Which One is Best for You?

The field of nursing is one of the most secure employment options you can find, with a regular shortage of nurses reported each month. In fact, in May of 2011 alone, more than 121,000 new job ads were placed by employers and staffing agencies looking for registered nurses, according to Wanted Analytics. However, the nursing field requires specific education requirements for testing and placement, with several different degree options available, depending on your career goals. There are three main routes you can choose from to get into the nursing field — a bachelor’s of science degree, an associate’s degree or a diploma in nursing. There is also the option for a master’s degree in nursing for those looking for more responsibility within the administration and operation within their workplace, such as with a hospital.

Diploma in Nursing

A diploma in nursing is provided directly by a hospital. Online nursing programs typically lasts between two to three years, and in many cases is combined with a local college for classes like humanities and basic science. While some diploma programs now offer credit through nearby universities, many of the classes may not be transferable for a more advanced degree in nursing later. However, a diploma is enough to secure a spot for the same certification tests as an associates or bachelor’s degree.

Associate Degree in Nursing

Associate degrees in nursing are provided by junior colleges or community colleges. The advantage over diploma programs is that most associate degree programs qualify for federal financial aid sources to help pay for your tuition and other education-related costs. Associate degrees in nursing typically take two to three years to complete.
